Kia is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with the introduction of two significant models: the EV4 sedan and hatchback, and the intriguing EV2 urban SUV concept. Revealed during Kia’s 2025 EV Day event in Spain, these vehicles highlight the automaker’s commitment to sustainable mobility while diversifying its product lineup.
The Kia EV4 is poised to be a game-changer in the affordable electric car segment. Building upon the foundation of the previously introduced concept in 2023, the EV4 is now officially entering production with two distinct body styles. The sedan variant sports a sleek, elongated design, while the hatchback version caters specifically to European tastes, boasting a sporty “five-door” aesthetic. Each model is designed to attract a range of consumers looking for cost-effective electric options.
What differentiates the EV4 from its higher-performing counterparts, like the EV6, is its configuration. Both the sedan and hatchback will come standard with single-motor front-wheel drive, offering a power output of 150 kW. With an acceleration capability of 0-62 mph in just 7.4 seconds, the EV4 provides adequate performance for daily city driving needs without sacrificing efficiency. It operates on Kia’s 400-volt E-GMP platform, which, while not as rapid in charging as the 800-volt systems used in other premium EVs, can still charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 31 minutes—an important factor for busy drivers.
One of the standout features of the EV4 is its exceptional battery range. Equipped with the larger 81.4 kWh battery, it is estimated to travel up to 630 kilometers—around 391 miles—on a single charge. In contrast, the smaller 58.3 kWh battery variant will provide a range of approximately 430 kilometers, or 267 miles. These figures reflect Europe’s more favorable WLTP standards, which may differ from more stringent testing protocols elsewhere.
The technological advancements in the EV4 aim to enhance driver experience significantly. A remarkable 30-inch widescreen display unifies three separate screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment, powered by Kia’s innovative “connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC)” software. This integration allows for a variety of entertainment options, including access to popular apps like YouTube and Netflix, alongside an AI-driven voice assistant that adds convenience to the driving experience. The vehicle will also feature V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capabilities, enabling users to power household devices directly from the car—a fascinating advancement for outdoor enthusiasts and road-trippers alike.
Alongside the EV4, Kia showcased the EV2 urban SUV concept, aimed at the budget-conscious consumer. This vehicle represents Kia’s smallest EV yet and is designed to be even more affordable than the EV4. The EV2 promises a flexible interior with configurable seating, allowing for increased passenger comfort or expanded cargo space. It also includes intriguing features such as removable portable speakers intended for social outings or tailgating events.
Set to debut in 2026, the EV2’s official specifications and pricing have yet to be determined. However, its placement in the urban vehicle market signals an acknowledgment of consumers’ growing desire for compact, eco-friendly transportation options that can easily navigate crowded city streets.
The EV4 sedan is expected to roll off production lines in Korea, with a targeted launch in March. Provisions for the hatchback include assembly in Slovakia and a market entry slated for the latter half of 2024. Notably, Kia will release 160,000 units initially, with a substantial allocation for North America, catering to a rising demand for affordably priced electric vehicles.
Kia President Ho Sung Song disclosed starting prices for the EV4 at around 37,000 euros (approximately $38,500), positioning it directly against competitors like the Tesla Model 3. As traditional automotive giants recalibrate their EV strategies, the introduction of both the EV4 and EV2 stands to establish Kia as a formidable player in the expanding electric vehicle landscape. As the industry evolves, Kia’s efforts to deliver practical and desirable electric solutions will be critical in shaping consumer choices in the future.
